Practicing Contentment.
As a flower farmer I struggle with this time of year. All the newness of a golden fall is fading and the bright flowers that filled my afternoons have succumb to a killing frost. It is easy to get lost in a daydream of planning for the next season or scrolling mindlessly through my highlights of flowers past. Scrounging and searching for a busyness to fill my current fall void. What can I do, what can I buy, what can share to make this season of fog, bare earth, and the muted browns of decay as beautiful as the last?
I can’t. I can’t rewind this season back to the last and I can’t fast forward it into the next. I can only appreciate it for what it is, practice contentment, and take time to find beauty in the season we are in.
I was watching a instagram story from Debt Free Mom, she was talking about budget tips. One of her top tips on budget reduction was practicing contentment. I had a sudden moment of clarity. Practice contentment. . . how simple is that. How. Life-changing. Is. That? This is not to say we should never reach for the next level, never strive for something more. This is simply saying it is also important to take in the stage we are in right now, take spend a little less time reaching for the next thing and spend a little more time being content in the here and now.
As always the Armchair Expert podcast had the perfect episode so reenforce my new goal of practicing contentment - Drew Barrymore. Drew has such a refreshing perspective on simply accepting some of the difficulties of her past (treatment at age 13, divorce, life as a child star, etc.) instead of holding onto resentment. Its a great listen!
This week has been filled with digging dahlia tubers - a.k.a. a little boys dream! Dahlia tubers cannot handle our cold winters so the tubers must be dug up and stored. The tubers are similar to potatoes. Every plant make more than one tuber with eyes and each eye can grow a new plant in the spring. This means even more dahlias next year! I have also been playing around by using our flower dried flowers in flower bars. I really love them.
