The Process.
Today someone asked me why I grow cut flowers. Instantly images of crisp white hydrangea blooms sprung into my mind. Simple - I do it to fill every vase in my house with fresh bouquets; to be surrounded by pops of vibrant color and the heavenly smell of sweet peas. Then I look around. Its early March my hands are covered in dirt and I’m surrounded by seeds that won’t flower until July. Is that really why I spend all my time boring my husband with talk about cut flowers? If it was I’d be crazy. The season’s grand finale of blooms is one of my favorite parts but I don’t think its my why - my main push. I daydream back to this morning, True on my lap browsing through hundreds of my flower pictures looking for perfect ones for my website. Or last night fully engulfed in the podcast “Against the Odds” placing thousands of seeds one by one into freshly made soil blocks. As odd as it sounds I think the whole process might be my why. My hours are poured into nurturing seedlings, watching Floret webinars on growing better dahlias, and nursing True as I attempt to learn how to edit an Instagram reel. And I love it. I feel grounded. I feel as thought my hobbies now have a purpose and a reason to be showcased. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t love every part of it cough, cough weeding cough, cough but it brings me joy and purpose overall. And sometimes I think life should be as simple as that. Arm-fulls of sunflowers are just the cherry on top.
“How do you want to feel in pursuit of that goal? It’s easy to get wrapped up in getting to the top of the mountain and putting all of your energy into that destination. But it really is about the journey along the way.”
