Seeds.
If you take time the time to read the instructions on the back of a seed packet, it soon becomes evident that getting seeds to germinate can be incredibly complex. Larkspur for example demands to be buried deep in the soil at 50 degrees in complete darkness to sprout. Before you can even think about planting larkspur seeds, they need to be exposed to wet, freezing conditions for at least a week. Celosia on the other hand is just as specific but oh so different. Celosia seeds beg to be scattered on top of hot, humid 80 degree soil and exposed to bright, shining lights.
If I keep trying to plant larkspur seeds in the way of celosia seeds, so few will sprout. Its not that the larkspur seeds are poor quality or defected, its that they were made for something much different. But when the larkspur seeds needs are finally met they gives off unequaled displays of light, airy true-blue flowers.
For my first three years after college I couldn't quite figure it out. I had all the things I thought I wanted; an amazing job in my degree, opportunity to travel, living next to a big city with so many things to do, and a boyfriend with an even better job. We had it made...but I was miserable. I remember looking around and seeing my peers thriving while it took everything I had to get out of bed and do even the simplest things. My dad was so proud. Everyone I told what I had been up to since college gave me a pat on the back and a big congratulations. I was so hard on myself. What was wrong with me that I was struggling to make it work? Its taken years but I've finally found I wasn't doing myself justice. I needed a few more animals and a few less people. I needed a space to grow things and a life that moved at a little slower pace. I needed to be close to the family and community that made me feel loved.
If you are trying your hardest at something and still failing while others are growing beautifully along side you, maybe it’s not you. Maybe it’s that your needs are different. You to have the potential to reach a state of bloom and beauty, you just have to make sure your own unique needs are met.
Because plant, shrub, and tree needs can vary so drastically, planting native species helps to keep plant needs inline with your growing area. If you live in Ottertail County, the East Ottertail County Soil and Water Conservation District has a tree sale every spring. On this tree sale you can purchase native trees, shrubs, and pollinator kits for windbreaks, erosion control, reforestation, or permanent wildlife cover. I will post the online shop link below!
Last year I was so anxious to get everything seeded down into the soil as soon as I could. This year I am taking my time - enjoying this brief low before the season picks back up. This is a little easier said than done as I watch flower farmers from around the country starting seeds, and in some cases tilling ground. We still have 12 weeks until our last frost date so I am no where near behind. Incubating eggs and snow-covered toddlers can hold my attention a little longer.
